Pineville police swarmed a Bojangles' restaurant Tuesday night after two people were injured amid gunfire in the latest of a recent spate of shootings in Mecklenburg County stores.
The shooting occurred at 9:45 p.m. during an armed robbery at the eatery on Pineville-Matthews Road near Interstate 485, police said. Medic, a Mecklenburg County ambulance service, transported two people to Carolinas Medical Center, a dispatcher said. Few additional details were available early today.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were asked to assist Pineville police, said Capt. Tim Jayne. As of 11 p.m., no arrests had been made, he said.
The shooting was unusual for Pineville but marks at least the fourth shooting within a business in Mecklenburg County within the past two weeks. At least three people have died in such shootings in 2005 so far.
On Feb. 22, two Pizza Hut employees were rushed to a hospital after they were shot in the legs by two armed men who robbed the 6507 N. Tryon St. shop shortly after 11 p.m., authorities said.
On Feb. 25, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a clerk at the $29.99 Shoe Warehouse on East Sugar Creek Road shot two of three robbers, injuring one and killing 27-year-old Nathan Cuthbertson.
Last Wednesday, Jamie Mareno, 26, was shot outside the Midtown Food Mart II convenience store on Berryhill Road and later died.
Police said a man had walked into the store and demanded money at gunpoint. A clerk, whose name was not released, followed the man to the parking lot and a shooting began.
Earlier in the year, Mehretab Woldeghebriel, 50, died Jan. 20 after being shot Jan. 2 when a man tried to rob his Midtown Food Mart on Shamrock Drive at Eastway Drive.
